Week 32 Update: Final 3 Weeks Countdown Begin!

I cannot believe we have made it through week 32- another significant milestone in triplets pregnancy!  A Biophysical Profile (BBP) Test is usually performed at this gestational age.  BBP combines ultrasound evaluation with a Non-Stress Test (NST) and is intended to determine the fetal health during the third trimester.  5 specific fetal attributes (breathing, movement, muscle tone, heart rate, and amniotic fluid) are studied and scored during the BBP.  For more information about BBP, please visit http://americanpregnancy.org/prenatal-testing/biophysical-profile/ .

Fion and triplets @ Week 32!!!  She looks brilliant...  Don't you agree?

Below is some updates about our 3 beanies at our week 32 check up.

Beanie #1 (Baby A):
Position: Right Lateral (Cephalic)
Average size: 32.9 weeks
BBP score: 8/8 Normal*
Est. weight: 1,990gm (45 percentile) - Beat baby C and has become our new GIANT.

Beanie #2 (Baby B):
Position: Left Lateral (Cephalic)
Average size: 31.1 weeks
BBP score: 8/8 Normal*
Est. weight: 1,600gm (10 percentile) - Still the smallest of all.  Growth rate continue to slow, but our OB is not concern as it's common for one or more triplets to measure smaller than normal.  Grow baby grow!!!

Beanie #3 (Baby C):
Position: Top Transverse (Right to Left)
Average size: 32.2 weeks
BBP score: 8/8 Normal*
Est. weight: 1,880gm (35 percentile) - At PAR.  Baby C was our GIANT at week 30.

Overall:
All babies appear to do well and so does Fion.  Thank goodness.  A score of 8/8 is a perfect score, which is very reassuring.  YAY!!!

Alright.  This is a quick update on our beanies.  We are just 3 weeks or 18 days away from our scheduled cesarean (C-Section).  So, let the countdown begin!  Grow beanies grow...!!!

Additional Week 30 Update: The BIG Move

In my last post, I talked about some of major purchases we made in order to prepare for the arrival of our triplets .  However, I was under some pressure to close out and publish the blog quickly and did not get to mention some other significant events and milestones we had achieved during the past few weeks.  Though, I must say that shopping for our children remains the most enjoyable part of this whole pregnancy experience to-date, not only because it distracted me from worrying something will go wrong in the middle of this "high-risk" pregnancy, but it gave me a great opportunity to explore and learn about many baby need-to-have essentials and good-to-have-but-not-necessary gadgets.  To this end, I have to agree that I am a gadget geek and will expand a lot of (more than average) efforts to learn about most if not all the specific details about what the product is made of and designed to do.  This gets a lot worse when it comes to camping tools and outdoor related products!  :)

Let's do a quick recap on what we have been through during these past few weeks, apart from our seemingly endless shopping checklist...  :)

1) Bi-weekly prenatal visits to Mount Sinai Hospital Downtown Toronto.  One of the major challenges for multiple pregnancy is that you will need to have frequent prenatal visits such as ultrasound monitoring, pediatrician, obstetrician and gynecologist (OB / GYN) appointments.  In our situation, our predetermined prenatal visits with our practitioner (Dr. Murphy) were scheduled as follow: Every other week for the first 33 weeks, and then weekly or more thereafter until delivery date.  Although, weekly or bi-weekly appointments might sound like a lot of commitments, but they are all necessary steps to ensure the well being of our babies.  Moreover, they also lead to some of the most memorable moments in this pregnancy journey.

The entrance that marked the beginning of a new adventure for our family of 5.  Over 6,500 babies started their lives here every year.

Fion waiting patiently for her OB / GYN.

A pic I took with Fion while we were waiting for our OB.

2) Five consecutive prenatal classes for multiples.  To better prepare ourselves to deal with the upcoming challenges in our lives, we decided to sign up for a prenatal class which runs every Tuesday night for 5 consecutive weeks.  Being recognized as one of the top women's health-care centres in the world, Mount Sinai Hospital offers classes that specifically designed to meet the special needs of parents who are expecting multiples.  This class unfortunately landed on the same day as our bi-weekly prenatal visit, which made Tuesday an exceptionally long day for us as we had to spend over 14 hours at the hospital from 7am to 9pm.  Below were some of the pics we took at one of our classes.
Dummy babies to practice our diaper changing skills!

Um...  Is she being possessed...  Should I be worried?

3) Setup a wooden shed in our backyard.  I had always wanted to put a shed in backyard for extra storage.  However, it didn't happen after I had spent more than 5 years in our home.  The topic of putting a shed had once again arise when I got my new Honda Odyssey.  I realized that I had finally outgrow the space of my garage and the Odyssey won't be able to park inside the garage in winter if I don't put away some of the gardening tools and outdoor supplies I bought over the years.  Also, another BIG challenge for raising triplets is to come up with an innovative way to take care of all the sanitary needs.  OH GROSS...  Yes, you got it, the needs I referred here is the disposal of DIRTY DIAPERS - A lot of them.  Let's do some quick math here, a baby would need between 8 and 10 diapers a day, or between 56 and 70 diapers a week.  Triplets would mean that we would run through between 168 and 210 diapers a week!  Composite garbage collection come every week to collect them, so I would need approximately 4 composite green bin - each has a capacity of 46.5L for all the diapers disposal needs!!!  OK, enough "trash" talk...  So, I visited a reputable local shed shop and talked to the owner Steve to have one built specifically for my needs.  Luckily, it's getting toward the end of the season and Steve told me that he might have one that would fit my need perfectly, just need some minor tweaking on the windows and widen the front gate to put a double door.  I didn't get a chance to take a picture of my beautiful new shed, but below is one similar to the one I installed, just got window and flower planter on the side and it is a double door version.

A beautiful wooden shed to add new character and more essences to our backyard...

4) Celebrating our 6th anniversary.  Romance is love and love is romance.  I must admit that I love sweet surprise as much as I enjoy to organize one.  This year is no difference.  Despite the fact that we were so busy planning and implementing the plan for our little ones, we took time off to cherish our lives and every milestone achieved.  This year marked the 6th anniversary of our marriage and we decided to throw a last minute surprise to each other.  We booked a dinner reservation at a restaurant at the historical distillery district, followed by a Kurios show preformed by Cirque-Du-Soleil.  On our way to the show, we admired the beautiful sunset that the City of Toronto had offered us.

Entering the world of Kurios... Another first time experience for the two of us.  Despite being a last-minute planner, we both enjoyed the show very much.

At the end of the day, Fion used her little creative mind and created this little postage stamp and marked the day.  Life is simple, but once again at its best!

5) Moved to Downtown Toronto.  At Fion's week 28 pregnancy, I suddenly had a thought that we needed to temporarily move to Downtown Toronto, where Fion and the babies would be within close proximity to our OB / GYN at Mount Sinai Hospital.  The idea was quite well received to everyone and it quickly turned into a series of hardcore online real estate searches and know what???  It's time for pack up!  We were very lucky to find a finished suite that is within walking distance to Mount Sinai Hospital and we booked and moved in just before I had to head to Niagara-on-the-lake for a corporate retreat.  Just-In-Time!!!  It's also such a relief to know that Fion is right at where she needed to be.  In fact, this is what kept me worrying during the day and what kept me up during the night.  Regardless, packing up for the move didn't sound too hefty of a task as we already had our hospital bag packed (in case of emergency), we just needed to pack more of everything.  From booking to moving, everything was done within 3 days!

Home sweet home...  Living & Dining all finished with modern furniture

Flat screen TV to keep Fion occupied - day and night!

King size comfy bedding w/ extra cushionsss for head, back, sides and leg support...

A rather small but still a functional kitchen...

Clean bathroom and great bright lighting fixture...

This post summed all the major activities we accomplished in the past few weeks.  Nevertheless, Fion and I are both committed and will continue to work our way out alongside with all the prayers, loves and supports we received from our friends and families.  The next milestone: Week 32...

Week 30 Milestone

From my last post I talked about Fion's week 24 viability baby shower.  I couldn't believe that we successfully took this pregnancy to week 30, another major milestone in triplet pregnancy.  At this gestational age, the survival rate of triplets was thought to be at 95% or greater.  Whew...  What a BIG relief!!!  Below are some updates about our 3 little "beanies" - a term used by Fion :).  Note: no ultrasound will be shown because they won't show well (too big for a full body pic) and are very expansive to purchase - $30 for every 5 shots!

Beanie #1 (Fetus A):
Position: Right Lateral
Average size: 30.4 weeks
Est. weight: 1,680 gm (50 percentile) * At PAR

Beanie #2 (Fetus B):
Position: Left Lateral
Average size: 29.6 weeks
Est. weight: 1,470 gm (40 percentile) * Eh Yaya...  Fetus B is always the smallest one among the three.  Grow baby grow!!!

Beanie #3 (Fetus C):
Position: Top Transverse
Average size: 30.6 weeks
Est weight: 1,700 gm (55 percentile) * Our little GIANT

Overall:
All babies are striving well and within reasonable of weight discrepancies.  We had been told that any percentile within 20% was considered reasonable.

Unlike week 24 (viability), we did not plan to formally celebrate this milestone.  In fact, we were extremely busy with more planning and shopping activities that made the past 6 weeks passed by like a blink of an eye!  The following contained some of our shopping highlights during the past 6 weeks. Well, I must said Fion and I both enjoy shopping very much.  We love shopping for our triplets!

1) 2014 Honda Odyssey - There aren't many triplets-friendly vehicle in the market.  Imagine, trying to fit 3 car seats in a vehicle?!?!  Unfortunately, none of the vehicles I currently own will fit 3 car seats and guess what?  That only lead to one answer - A new vehicle!  I am not going to go over all the features of the vehicle and why we thought it is a good fit for us, as I am pretty sure that I will touch on this in details in the near future.

3 car seats fitted perfectly in the middle roll (not our car seats - just some random pics from internet)

2) Strollers - We faced the a very similar dilemma choosing our strollers as we faced in selecting the vehicle.  There are many strollers that allow you to carry two children at ease.  Well, to be more specific, 2 children at different stage, say an infant and a toddler.  Knowing that our options are very limited for triplet strollers - we have decided to go with a two strollers option.  We chose to go with a Baby Joggers City Select for its ability to carry 2 car seats in 16 different configurations and a Uppa Baby Cruz for its compact size and extra large basket.

The compact Uppababy Cruz!  Very big bottom storage unit!

3) Maxi-Cosi Mico AP Infant Car Seat.  Despite being one of the most recognized car seat brands in safety, we like this car seat because it is also light weight and fit snugly with both of our chosen strollers above!

4) 3 cribs from Toy-R-Us.  The safest way to secure your baby is to put them in the crib.  One baby per crib.  Absolutely NO double / triple occupancy!

5) 3 Graco Travel Lite with Stages.  We have learnt from our prenatal class that it is a good idea to keep our babies within very close proximity to our bed at night.  Also, we thought that it is a good idea to have some sort of portable cribs, which would allow us to move them around when we need to.  We found this wonderful crib that can grow with our babies over 3 different stages.  Stage 1 - bassinet for infants staying close to us at night.  Stage 2 - Bassinet for bigger infants to stay just around everywhere we need them to be, including our parents' place!  Stage 3 - Playard for children that need to be contained in an isolated safe heaven, where you know that the babies will be safe as long as they are in it.

6) Baby Bjorn Bouncer Balance Soft.  We found this gem from one of the local stores located at downtown Whitby.  It is so compact and can be folded down to nothing and carried easily with us wherever we go.  The extremely well ergonomically designed bouncer is thought to aid babies to develop the their motor skills and balance.  It can be elevated to 3 different stages and is suitable from babies and toddlers aged 0 - 2.
Think green???  No batteries required.  It only bounces when you baby moves...

So versatile with 3 adjustable setting, fold down and threw away in sec!

We begun our preparation based on information we gathered through various sources, such as parenting website, books, information brochure provided by our hospitals, and last but not least, online blogs from other multiple parents!  I must say that I found the online blog the most valuable of all, as multiple parents generously shared their real life challenges, mistakes learnt and emotional ups and downs throughout their pregnancy and parenting experiences.  These readings were also the inspiration that led to the creation of this online blog!  I look forward to our next milestone - week 32!  Let's keep our fingers crossed...  We can do it!

The 24-Week Viability Baby Shower

From the last post, I gave an update on our fetal anatomy ultrasound at week 19.5. It was such a relief to find out that all babies were doing well so far.

This post will provide an update on our next milestone, week 24 - VIABILITY. At this gestational age, the probability of the fetus to survive outside the uterus if borne early (premature) is thought to be at 50%. To celebrate this achievement, I decided to throw Fion a surprise baby shower. Also, this might be the only pregnancy that Fiona will go through, so I cannot excuse myself not to throw a shower for her. Yes, shower at week 24 might sound early for most expectant moms having singleton as their baby bump might have just begun to show. However, this was not the case for Fion as her 24 weeks triplet bump was looking more like 30 weeks. Nevertheless, below are some of the highlights on that day.
